Tradition Innovation & the Digital Era (TIDE)

Program Description

The TIDE program fuses essential skills training, technical and technological competencies, and cultural exploration and expression, within an eight-week tourism course. Not only do participants gain a good foundation in health and wellness, soft skills, and industry-geared functional and hard skills, but they also learn about the history of tourism, the sectors of tourism, and the innovations that are keeping tourism alive in a post pandemic world. Participants are introduced to the latest in Covid-19 protocols, new industry practices, and the emerging market of Virtual Tourism.

Students participate in a Virtual Tourism final project, which involves a livestream virtual tour made up of video segments, photographs, crafting demonstrations, and other experiences that showcase the attractions in their geographic region, as well as express their own interpretations of their culture reality.

Each participant will gain knowledge and certifications that will assist them in finding a job in one of the sectors of Tourism or starting/growing their own Tourism business. In addition, they will have their Virtual Tour project to count as Tourism experience on their resume. And Eight weeks of career coaching upon completion of the program

Learning happens through lectures, discussion, hands-on activities, assessments, online and in-person field trips, and independent study projects (language study, cultural research, time with elders etc). This course can be taught in person, or online. Indigenous guest speakers, and local elders and knowledge keepers are an essential part of the learning that takes place.
